UV Water Filter Benefits and Disadvantages

UV water filter offer some benefits not available with conventional water filtering methods. In some cases, a UV filter system could be used in combination with activated carbon or reverse osmosis filtration systems. In addition to killing or inactivate almost all the microorganisms, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts, that may be present in the drinking water, UV water filter benefits also includes:

Trojan UVMAX H UltraViolet Disinfection System
  • No chemicals added to the water so there is no chance of harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in treated water
  • The contact time to disinfect water and ready for drinking is shorter than the regular filtration system.
  • Can reduce the risk of exposure to sicknesses and diseases. It is a scientific fact that majority of child sickness and adult diseases are caused by water-borne viruses, bacteria and intestinal protozoa such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Inadequate water treatment can cause severe heath problems like hepatitis B, tuberculosis, meningitis, typhoid fever, tricomoniasis, and cholera, glaucoma, gastrointestinal pain, salmonella, poliovirus, and diarrhea.
  • Ultraviolet water filtration is inexpensive to maintain.
  • Ultraviolet light is a natural, cost effective, environmentally friendly disinfection process for use in homes wherever water quality is a concern.
  • Ideal treatment method during water emergencies due to bacteria contaminations.

Disadvantages of UV Filtration

  • A major disadvantage of a UV filtration is because it does not leave disinfection residual needed to maintain persistent germ-free quality water. UV-disinfected water may become re-contaminated if exposed to further bacteria contamination. Whereas, chlorine-disinfected water will have the benefit of chlorine residual that remains in water long after the first chlorine dose is applied.
  • A UV water filter may not be effective if water is highly turbid or contaminated with sediment and organic materials. In this case, a prefilter may be necessary to remove any materials that could hide the viruses and bacteria from UV light.
