Disadvantages of UV Filtration - A major disadvantage of a UV filtration is because it does not leave disinfection residual needed to maintain persistent germ-free quality water. UV-disinfected water may become re-contaminated if exposed to further bacteria contamination. Whereas, chlorine-disinfected water will have the benefit of chlorine residual that remains in water long after the first chlorine dose is applied.
- A UV water filter may not be effective if water is highly turbid or contaminated with sediment and organic materials. In this case, a prefilter may be necessary to remove any materials that could hide the viruses and bacteria from UV light.
