Water Purifier Systems

Good water purifier systems must be effective remove, kill, or inactivate all types of disease-causing microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and protozoan to make it safe to drink. A purification system can be any product that contains an antimicrobial (germ-killing) or bacteriostatic (slowing or inhibiting growth of germs) agent and it usually carries an EPA registration. This registration does not mean the purifying device is certified as effective because it is not the same as the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) that testes and certifies for performance.

Both the filters and purifiers are designed to remove or reduce dangerous bacteria, but only a purifier device is capable of removing viruses and protozoan. This device may include a chemical agent like iodine resin and may be followed by additional filtration systems such as charcoal, ceramic, carbon or fiberglass filters to remove any excess chemicals. Ideal for hikers, campers, and in homes during water emergency. Portable purifiers are good for camping; traveling, or hiking, and permanent installation can be under the sink, or on countertop to filter at the tap, or in the basement to filter water to the whole house.

How it works

All purifiers typically work the same way. In a portable or handheld purification system, water is sucked or pumped in from one end, goes through disinfection and filtration and then dispensed or discharged through the other end. In a household installation, purified water is dispensed via pitcher or faucet mount with a purifying unit.

Types

  1. Some portable purifiers can pumped by hands while some are battery operated; and some are built into the center of a bottle.
  2. Temporary installation for apartment dwellers are pitchers, and countertop units, or and permanent installation are inline, undersink, and whole house purifiers.
  3. Purification tablets use either iodine or chlorine to treat the water. After treating it with tablets it is better to pour the water back and forth between two containers to add oxygen and improve the taste. It’s ideal for use in countries where the quality of water is in question.
  4. A hand-held UV water purification system includes a battery-operated enclosed pen-light sized ultraviolet lamp that disinfect the lamp comes in contact with contaminated water.
  5. Permanent UV-purifiers can also be inline, undersink, countertop, or whole house installation.
Water purifier brands include Everpure, Crystal Quest, and Trojan; some Brita and Pur faucet mount and pitcher filters are designed with UV purification devices. Purifiers for camping and hiking options include the famous Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Purifier, Steripen,  and the most popular and effective MSR, You may visit each of the links to compare prices before decide on whihc to buy.
