EPA recommends that consumers should look for certified chromium-6 (hexavalent chromium) filters if they think their drinking water is contaminated with the chemical. The best and often recommended home water treatment technologies to remove the contamination are by reverse osmosis (RO) and distillers. These technologies are available in undersink, countertop, and even portable water bottle with a filter insert. ROs are listed under NSF/ANSI 58 for reduction of hexavalent chromium; and distillers are listed under NSF/ANSI 62 to completely remove the chemical. Also, because reverse osmosis units are the most effective, it may be why no Brita filters are available to remove hexavalent chromium. Water Wise Distiller Model 8800 | While distillers are good alternatives and also ensuring high purity water, these types of water treatment devices have the tendency to remove other essential minerals in drinking water. In a few cases, RO chromium filters having independent certifications may be a little expensive that ones with no certification. But a filtering system that has been verified by independent experts will provide the assurance that it has been tested to ensure performance as claimed by the manufacturers. So, it may be cost effective and perhaps make healthful sense to spend a little more on a filter other experts have verified than spending money on a cheap and possibly less effective filtration system. The following are just are few of certified chromium filters which can be verified on the NSF website. |
