I had an emergency situation at my home last Saturday. All the three cartridges filters (pre-filter, post-filter, and reverse osmosis filter (RO)) in my GE Smart water filter were due for replacement. I have never had a problem installing these replacement cartridge filters. After I performed all the ritualistic cleaning I installed the filters and ready to go. The RO holder started to leak. I tightened it more but unfortunately I left out the O ring which is meant to prevent such a leak.

So, replaced the O ring but I ended up breaking one of the elbow nuts while I was trying to complete the installation process. This tiny broken part of the system effectively renders the entire filter system useless, at least for the time being. With no safe water to drink, I rushed to the store and I bought a Brita 42556 Grand Pitcher . To my surprise, this 2-quart pitcher water filter is listed to remove chlorine taste and odor, lead, mercury, cadmium, copper, zinc, and more.

The only problem is that it filters too slowly. I am used to going to the RO filter dispenser for filtered water 24/7. I don’t have to wait for water to filter for any length of time. In spite of the slowness; filtered water from this pitcher filter taste great. In the meantime, I ordered a new RO holder on Amazon.com. I like to shop-compare even for the smallest item and this RO holder is cheaper on Amazon.com than anywhere on the web.

I can’t wait to have my RO filter back.

Why should you care if your filter system is approved by a third-party? After all the manufacturers says its okay facilities give passing grades to those filter devices before they are shipped to consumers.

EPA does not give certification

Several independent organizations like NSF International, Water Quality Associations (WQA), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) inspect and certify water filters. WQA and UL generally follow the NSF/ANSI certification standards.

Just in case you don't know before now, EPA makes it clear that it does not approve or certify any water filter.
